The Plaza Hotel: Tourism, Trade, and Style

Built in 1928, the Plaza Hotel stands out for its striking Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a style that was rare in Kamloops at the time and helped set the tone for a wave of new construction in the city. More than just a stylish addition to the downtown core, the hotel is historically significant for its connection to the Kamloops Boards of Trade.

Throughout the 1920s, the Boards of Trade played a major role in shaping Kamloops’ identity, working to position the city as a welcoming destination for tourists and business travellers alike. The Plaza was a product of that vision, offering modern comforts, refined design, and a central location that helped reinforce Kamloops’ growing reputation as a hub in the interior.

Today, the Plaza Hotel remains a recognizable landmark in the heart of downtown, representing both the city’s architectural evolution and its early ambitions to promote itself on a larger stage.
